How do I format my USB drive to exFAT or FAT32 for SYNC updates?

How do I format my USB drive to exFAT or FAT32 for SYNC®* updates?

To perform a SYNC software update, certain vehicle's SYNC generations require the USB drive (also known as a flash or thumb drive) must be formatted on a Personal Computer (PC) or Macintosh (Mac).

Formatting Your USB Drive

Notes:

  • SYNC with MyLincoln Touch®, SYNC Gen 1.1, and SYNC Gen 1 require a USB drive formatted to FAT32.
  • SYNC 4, SYNC with Voice-activated Navigation, and SYNC with "P" Navigation do not use a flash drive. Refer to the article What are the flash drive requirements when performing a SYNC update? for more information.
