What Are SYNC® 4 Software Updates?

As we continue to revolutionize the technology that improves Lincoln vehicles, we’re determined to get the newest features as soon as possible. Software updates112, available only on vehicles with SYNC® 476, introduce certain new features and enhancements to help ensure owners  enjoy the best version of their vehicle. Some updates will seamlessly complete in the background. More complex updates might require Lincoln vehicles to be parked with the ignition off for a period of time in order to complete. For these types of updates, owners can choose a recurring schedule that is most convenient.

The Benefits of Sync® 4 Software Updates

Many updates require little to no action by the customers, enabled by SYNC® 4 Technology76 that keeps current software running until the new version is ready to go. Some updates may occur seamlessly in the background, while others require a specific day and time when the vehicle is parked, with the ignition off. In-vehicle alerts will indicate what updates were installed when the vehicle is started the next time.

Get Started With Sync® 4 Software Updates

1. Connect to Wi-Fi

Once you connect to your preferred private network, your vehicle will automatically reconnect whenever it’s in range. Some updates might only be able to download to your vehicle via Wi-Fi®, so for the most seamless experience, keep Wi-Fi on and connected wherever available.

2. Set a recurring schedule

While some updates complete seamlessly in the background, other updates will require your vehicle to be parked with the ignition off for a period of time. Setting a schedule (we suggest overnight or during work hours) ensures you won’t need your vehicle during these types of updates. And don’t worry about forgetting — you’ll be reminded of your schedule each time these updates are ready for installation, and you can adjust as needed.

3. Download and install

With Wi-Fi connected and a recurring schedule set, very little will be required of you. Simply keep an eye out for any software update icons that might appear on your in-vehicle screen.

Accepting Software Updates

Should you choose to turn your Automatic Updates OFF but keep Notifications ON (manual setting), you will not receive software updates automatically, and you will be prompted to accept the update. Look for the Black arrow pointing down at the horizontal bracket indicating a software system update on your in-vehicle screen Click on the icon when it appears to learn more.

Even if you have Automatic Updates ON, there are some occasions when an update needs your permission to continue. When this happens, a Locked padlock icon by a black arrow pointing down at the horizontal bracket will appear on your in-vehicle screen to indicate permission is required to update. Click or tap on the icon to learn more and accept the update.

There are two ways to accept updates:

A System That Continuously Evolves With You

Update Your SYNC® System With Wi-Fi

  • SYNC 3 is required  to update your vehicle over Wi-Fi.

  • You will be able to use SYNC during the update process.

  • If the update is interrupted, it will continue where it left off the next time Wi-Fi  is connected.

  • Your vehicle does not need to be running for the update to take place.

Things to note before you begin

1. Only vehicles with SYNC 3 can update over Wi-Fi.

2. You can use all of your SYNC system's capabilities during the update.

3. If the update is interrupted for any reason, it will continue where it left off the next time it connects to Wi-Fi.

4. Your vehicle doesn’t have to be running for the update to start and/or complete.

5. You must use an external Wi-Fi for this update. You cannot use your phone or vehicle's hotspot.

6. A strong Wi-Fi signal is recommended for best performance.

Install update

1. Turn on your vehicle. If this is the first time you’ve used SYNC 3, or you’ve recently done a Master Reset, you may be prompted to enable automatic updates.

2. Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network by going into Settings > Wi-Fi.

3. Select your network and enter the password.

4. Once you are connected, go back to Settings and select the General button, then tap Automatic System Updates.

5. After the scan completes, verify that the "Last Checked for Updates" date displayed on the screen reflects today's date and time.

6. If there is an update available, it will begin to download in the background.

7. A confirmation message will appear on your screen when the download and update are complete. The length of time may vary, but your vehicle does not need to be running for the update to occur.
